In the early 1900s passenger trains from Wilmington and the piedmont of NC brought visitors to the White Sulphur Springs area. The tracks ended near the elegant White Sulphur Springs Hotel at the tiny town of Mount Airy. Cool breezes from the Blue Ridge Mountains, just eight miles away and the health benefits of the White Sulphur Springs mineral water lured turn of the century visitors to the area.
